Once you have collected your vehicle from the car rental station, please follow these instructions to get to Kautokeino, and the Thon Hotel. The journey time is less than two hours, but you’ll be driving through some wonderful scenery along the way, and no doubt you’ll stop to take pictures etc., so maybe you’d care to allow time in your schedule for this.
Anytime from mid to late September onwards, when temperatures start to drop, we can have flurries of snow. In the winter months then we can obviously have huge amounts of snow. This is the Arctic after all, so it’s to be expected.
Generally speaking, the Norwegians are very good at snow clearing, keeping roads open and the traffic free flowing. It should be noted, however, that from time to time the road can be shut until such time as the snow plough has done its job. If there is snowy or icy conditions, then you should definitely ask the car hire people about snow tyres, and whether or not they are equipped on your vehicle. There is no legal obligation to do this until a certain date, however, and it is normally down to the discretion of each different rental station / service provider.
If you nervous about driving in icy / snowy conditions, then we would strongly suggest that certainly between the months of October – April / early May, that you consider using another form of transport; either taking the bus, or hiring a taxi.
